Biomass torrefaction: treating biomass near the source

Raw biomass takes up a lot of space and holds little energy for its volume. Moving it over long distances is therefore expensive, both in money and in environmental impact.
One solution is to prepare the biomass on small local sites close to where it is collected. There it is pre-treated and made denser in energy before being shipped to central plants that process or use it. In short, the biomass is upgraded on site so that its energy is concentrated before transport. Torrefaction close to the source does exactly this.
